How long will my web site take to rank on Page 1 of Google?
We get this question a lot at Digital Marketing Hub. When it comes to web design and ranking high on a Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP), there honestly is no simple, one size fits all answer.
If you’ve had a budget website built somewhere else with minimal SEO input, it’s quite likely your site will never see the light of day. Having said that, if your website has been adequately designed and optimised for SEO, you may see some positive results within a few months.
SEO is a long-term strategy, and the time it takes to see significant results can vary depending on several factors. These factors include the current state of your website, the competitiveness of your industry and keywords, the quality and quantity of your content, the effectiveness of your SEO agency’s strategies, and the overall search engine landscape.
It’s not all about kewords and the ‘red light, green light’ of SEO software plugins in terms of how quickly you will rank well on Google, it’s much deeper than that.
Your page content is absolutely critical, as poorly written content stuffed with keywords and phrases may result in your site being penalised and displayed lower on Google Search Engine results.
Remember, it’s almost certain that your competition have an SEO strategy in place, so chances are your keyword SERPs may take a while to gain traction.
It’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that SEO is an ongoing process. Typically, you may start seeing some improvements in rankings and organic traffic within a few months, but substantial results may take six months to a year or more. Continuous effort and optimization are essential to maintain and improve your website’s search engine visibility over time.
The reality is that an effective SEO strategy is something that must be done ASAP. In my blog Why SEO is Crucial for Small Businesses, I wrote that;
Search Engine Optimisation is an INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE
It’s worth a read, I’m confident it will shine a brighter light on the relationship between a good web design and an effective SEO strategy.
How long does it take to design and build a website?
It depends upon the size and complexity of your website. We like to provide our clients with a fast turnaround and aim to complete our basic sites within 4 weeks for an average size website. Having said that, larger and more complex web design and builds will generally take more time.
Basic vs Advanced SEO
Not all Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the same.
Generally speaking, most SEO agencies provide the following Basic SEO inclusions:
- SEO plugin such as Yoast
- Page title – what you see in you browser tab
- Page layout – headings (h1,h2 etc) and paragraphs
- Meta Title and Meta Description via plugins – what you see on a Google search engine results page (SERP)
- Page speed reporting
- Sitemap indexing
On Page SEO goes further than what is generally provided. Ask your SEO agency to include the below optimisations, it’ll be well worth the extra cost and effort:
- All of the Basic SEO inclusions
- Content keyword optimisation
- Heading keyword optimsation
- Image alt text optimisation
- Image size optimisation
A reputable SEO agency, such as Digital Marketing Hub Australia will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your website and industry to develop a tailored SEO strategy. The specific strategies employed may vary depending on your goals, but some common approaches include:
a. On-page optimization: This involves optimizing elements within your website, such as meta tags, headings, URLs, and internal linking, to improve its relevancy and crawlability for search engines.
b. Keyword research and optimization: Identifying relevant keywords and integrating them strategically into your website’s content and meta data to increase visibility in search engine results.
c. Technical SEO: Addressing technical issues that may hinder search engine crawling and indexing, such as page speed optimization, mobile-friendliness, XML sitemap creation, and robot.txt optimization.
d. Content creation and optimization: Developing high-quality, engaging, and optimized content that aligns with user intent and incorporates relevant keywords to attract organic traffic.
e. Link building: Building authoritative and relevant backlinks from other websites to improve your website’s credibility and authority in the eyes of search engines. Link building can be a very time consuming and expensive task, particularly since recent Google algorithm updates have resulted in a tendancy to dismiss ‘old school’ link building practices due to their lack of relevance.
How much will it cost to build my website?
The cost of building a website will depend on various factors, such as the scope and complexity of your project, the number of pages and features, and the level of customisation required. It’s essential to discuss your specific requirements with your web design agency (us) to receive an accurate cost estimate. We can provide you with a detailed breakdown of the costs, including design, development, content creation, hosting, domain registration, and ongoing maintenance. Why can’t I find my website on Google?
There are so many valid reasons why your website is ranking poorly on a search engine results page. Here are a few:
- not enough high value keywords
- images not optimised
- site content is too ‘thin’
- your website may be relatively new
- has your site been indexed
- is your website current and relevant?
- highly competitive field
And the list goes on. Speak with your professional SEO agency to audit your website for possible solutions.
How long before my search engine rankings improve?
It depends entirely on what you intend to rank for. If an SEO agency promises top 3 positions within weeks, or even a few months, it may well be that they are choosing very weak keywords for which to rank.
Ranking for such weak terms may put you in the top positions on a search engine results page, however the traffic and subsequent conversions will generally be quite limited.
Popular, higher value keywords will often return much more organic traffic if you are ranking high enough, however it can take months, if not years to achieve those lofty heights.
Digital Marketing Hub Australia recommend a measured approach and the diversification of efforts for both low and high value key search terms.
